The breeding of Mangalitsa pigs on our farm is a result of our desire for organic pork. Our estate produces sufficient scraps and residue from grain processing for feed stock. The Mangalitsa pig, also called the curly-haired hog, has been of great significance to the Pannonian-Hungarian region and was the dominant breed right until after the war. It later became increasingly displaced by English breeds. Only a few pure breed Mangalitsa remained and the breed was threatened with extinction.
The swallow-bellied Mangalitsa pig belongs to European unimproved lard-type breeds that are descended directly from wild boar populations. A thick woolly coat protects the pigs against the cold as well as the heat. They relish the outdoor life and can be kept in the open all year round.
